Bird Banding at Sand Bluff Bird Observatory
Saturday, September 21 – 7:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
We are excited to announce a bird banding trip on Saturday, September 21. Please join us as we visit the Sand Bluff Bird Observatory, beginning at 7:00 a.m. and remaining in the vicinity until around 11:00 a.m. The address is 10602 Haas Rd., Rockton, IL. Please watch for deer along the country roads as you drive in. There is a $5 fee for each participating young birder. ILYB will not be collecting the funds; rather, you may bring cash to provide to the SBBO.
There is a climate-controlled building nearby, with restrooms, and there are spaces to eat lunches/snacks indoors and outside. We advise you to bring bug spray, sunscreen, water, and maybe a snack/lunch.
If you cannot arrive promptly at 7:00 a.m. – no worries. We tend to create a text message group by the Friday evening before our trips, so late arrivals can inform us accordingly if they wish. Best times for netting birds is in the morning, with first “net runs” starting at around 7:00 a.m.
Souvenir caps, patches, and sweatshirts with the SBBO logo will be available for purchase.
After spending some time with bird banding, we may hike the forest preserve, visit the Nygren Wetlands overlook, and/or get some ice cream together at Dairy Haus in Rockton!

- Prothonotary Warbler
- Blue-winged Warbler
- Indigo Bunting
- Wilson’s Warbler
- Black-throated Blue and Black-throated Green Warbler
- Coopers Hawk
- Whippoorwills
- Black-billed and Yellow-billed Cuckoo
- Various sparrows and thrushes
- Registrants will be added to a text message group for ease of communication on the day of the event. You may attend from the beginning of the trip or catch up with us later in the morning.
